I can't connect to my shared printer on my Windows 98 SE machine

My windows 98 machine in the workgroup network is providing two main
resources: A shared folder and a shared printer. I can access the shared
folder on the Windows 98 machine from my Windows XP laptop but I can't access
the shared printer on the Windows 98 machine from my XP laptop.

I can browse to the printer using the Add Printer Wizard in Printer and
Faxes in Windows XP. The correct pathname or queue name shows up as
\\R9X3Q4\LEXMARK when I double click the R9X3Q4 node under Workgroup,
Microsoft Windows Network and when I then click LEXMARK below that. The
status also shows up as ready in this window. Please note, that R9X3Q4
represents the name of the Windows 98 machine and LEXMARK represents the
share name of the printer. However, when I click Next to accept the pathname
as \\R9X3Q4\LEXMARK, it comes up with a connect to printer error message.
The error message states: "The server for the Lexmark Z52 Series Colorfine
printer does not have the correct printer driver installed. If you want to
search for the proper driver, click OK. Otherwise, click OK. Otherwise,
click cancel and contact your network administrator or original equipment
manufacturer for the correct driver." I assume the server mentioned in this
error message refers to the Windows 98 machine. However, I can print locally
from the Windows 98 machine which means that there is nothing wrong with the
printer driver. The printer driver that is installed on the Windows 98
machine is not XP compatible as it only supports Windows 9x and Windows 2000.
I could see this being a problem if I was printing directly (locally) from
the XP laptop, but the incompatibiliy of the print driver installed on the
Windows 98 machine should not make a difference when trying to print remotely
over the LAN from the XP laptop as the print request is dealt with by the Win
98 machine. Besides, I was able to print remotely from my Windows XP laptop
in the past using the same printer driver on the Windows 98 machine. Its
only since I reinstalled my Windows 98 machine, that this problem has occured.

If I clicked OK like in the error message to continue, then it only diverts
me to the usual manufacter list of drivers window with the Have Disk button.
Even if I clicked the Have Disk button, and had a XP driver available, this
would only possibly allow me to print locally to the printer and not over the
LAN which is the main objective here.

Please note also that I can browse for the shared resources located on the
Windows 98 machine from my XP laptop over the LAN by choosing My Network
Places > Entire Network > Microsoft Windows Network > Workgroup > and double
clicking R9X3Q8. When I double click R9X3Q8 (the name of the Windows 98
machine) from my XP laptop in Network Places, the shared folder and shared
printer with a pipe are both displayed. I can access this shared folder on
the Windows 98 machine, but when I double click the shared printer here in My
Network Places it yields the same error message as in Add Printer Wizard in
Printers and Faxes.

The printer port setting for the shared Lexmark Printer on the Windows 98
machine shows up as LPT1: (Printer Port) in Printer Properties and the
sharename is displayed as LEXMARK.

Please note that the File and Printer service for Microsoft Networks is
installed on my Windows 98 machine and the two check boxes are ticked for
granting access to my files and printer(s). I can also ping the Windows 98
machine from my Windows XP laptop. However, I would like to point out that
when I was installing the File and Printer service for Microsoft Networks, it
came up with an alert message after requesting the Windows 98 SE CD, stating
"Version Conflict, A file being copied is older than the file currently on
your computer. It is recommended that you keep your existing file, file name
vserver.vxd, description VSERVER Virtual device Version 4.10.2224, Do you
want to keep this file". I clicked Yes as recommended. Could this have made
a difference?

Anyway, to summarise, I can access the shared folder on the Windows 98
machine from my Windows XP laptop but I can't connect or print to the shared
printer on the Windows 98 machine from my Windows XP laptop. I can browse to
the shared printer in Add Printer Wizard in Printer & Faxes and in My Network
Places from my XP laptop, but I keep getting the same annoying error message
as mentioned above. Personaly, I don't think it is a TCP/IP networking issue
or even a incorrect printer driver problem as stated in the alert message; it
may be a configuration setting in Windows 98 machine that wasn't there in the
past before I reinstalled my Windows 98 machine lately. Please remember that
I was able to print remotely before in the past from my XP laptop in the same
workgroup and using the same printer driver installed on the Windows 98
machine. I have carried out exactly the same identical steps as in the past
for setting up this network printer. Then, it must be some other
configuration setting such as the reported VSERVER.vxd file or Windows
critical update patches that have been applied to both machines in the
intervening period that must have caused this problem. I would like to state
again that I'm using the same installed printer driver on my Windows 98 as in
the past. This print driver did not cause me any problems in the past when
printing over the LAN from my XP laptop, then why should it cause me problems
now?

Anyway, I would really appreciate any assistance with this matter.

Windows XP cannot use 9x drivers. You need to use the Add Printer Wizard on
the XP PC (browse for a network printer).. and when it asks for the drivers,
use the drivers for the Z52 that are built into XP.

Thanks for the reply and the useful web link. Does this mean when I browse
for the printer over the network for \\R9X3Q4\LEXMARK in the Add Pinter
Wizard; I should click next and when the previously mentioned error message
appears, to click OK and then Click Have Disk in the Manufacturer's list of
drivers website window, and point or browse to my Windows XP installation CD.
I understand that Windows XP CD comes shipped with alot of drivers including
Lexmark Z52 as you pointed out in your web link.

Will this allow me to print from the shared printer over the network or it
will it just only allow me to print locally by directly connecting my laptop
to the printer using a parallel cable or USB cable. I would not be happy
with the latter.

Nevertheless, I would like to remind you again that I was able to print from
my XP laptop in the past using the existing printer driver installed on the
Windows 98 machine. I was able to print out numerous test pages via my XP
machine. The logic behind this is that the Windows 98 machine handles the
print request - so the XP machine does not need a XP compatible driver.
Obviously, if I was printing directly or locally from the XP machine, then I
would need a XP compatible print driver which I could get from the built-in
XP installation CD or by downloading it from the web.

Anyway, I trust what you have advised me is correct and will hopefully be
able to print from my XP laptop again. Please, correct me if the procedure
described in the first paragraph above does not correspond to what you said
in your initial reply.
