I have a Cannon Pixma ip1700 printer. I just changed the ink(why do you have
to push with all your might to insert the cartridges?) Anyway, got both of
hem in and the light on top tells me they're in there right. WhenI check in
the printer properties, it still tells me both cartridges are almostempty. I
just bought these. Can someone tell me what else I might not be doing? I
would really apreciate some feedback. Thanks in advance.

I don't know your particular printer, but the combination of "why do
you have to push with all your might to insert the cartridges?" and
"it still tells me both cartridges are almostempty" suggests to me
that you inserted them incorrectly. It should not take a lot of force.

By the way, for the future, please note that this is not a Windows
Vista question, and really doesn't belong here. You should ask a
question like this in a printing hardware newsgroup.

Are they genuine Canon ink cartridges and not third-party refills?

Did you remember to take the little plastic sealing strip off first? Are
they in the right way around?

I hate cartridge replacement, it's always a mess & rarely works from first attempt. Then when your black runs out you have sth urgent to print, & when once color runs out you have to throw out the entire cartridge... I like oem quality, but they're just too expensive & they run out too fast. So I'm looking to find sth better now... Can people suggest sth that will be high quality & will last longer? I don't want to refill because I print lots.

It sounds like a printer recognition problem to me. Pretty sure . Few
tricks, uninstall your printer driver and then reinstall again but this time
do not let the driver track your ink level. That is how they get you.

Those type of cartridges, CL41, PG40, CL37, PG38's and the CL51 and PG50 have a single use resistor if you like, built into the cartridge that registers the new ink level in a ne cartridge. They can still be used after refilling, so long as the printhead is not damaged and the elecrical performance is okay. The only thing is, you have to use your own eyes to determine when the cartridge is running out again, if words start getting feint, the black is running low, and when photo's start coming out funny colours, the colour cartridge is running low. You will only see new ink levels once NEW cartridges are installed.
The previous printer the Canon IP1600 will not accept refilled cartridges without the status monitor on the printer driver being disabled. You need to disable the monitor by accessing the driver settings.

Hope that helps
