Have to buy a new DVD drive and have the option of either IDE or SATA
connection. Told that when it comes to optical drives it's better to
purchase IDE drives. Any opinions on this?

Makes sense, thanks.

Definitely agree.
IDE is gone the way of AGP video cards, and it would be foolish to go that
way if you can use SATA now.

Two years down the road SATA will be obsolete, and they'll have a new
standard for everything, just so we have to keep spending money.

I don't agree. But 2 or 3 years ago, I would have.

Today, however, go with SATA.

I don't have any IDE drives in my computer. SATA DVD is great and the
cable size compared to IDE is terrific.
