Ink refill Brother laser HL 2040

I need to buy ink for my laser Brother HL 2040 and one of the ink
companys
said in their ad that the starter carrtidge could not be refilled.
I know the starter only holds 1/2 as much but why could it not be
refilled?

It actually depends in which country you bought the printer (which by the way
uses Toner, not Ink).
In some countries the starter cartridges are missing a small white cam that is
necessary to reset the printer when a full cartridge is installed, in other
countries the cam is in the cartridge. In all cases a non-starter cartridge has
the cam.
If you refill a cartridge that does not have the cam you will be unable to use
it.
