If you are trying to do what I think, which is to have a dark background
around a white character, that doesn't work!
There may be a way to use an outlined character, where the edge has sort of
a 3d effect, and have the center white or a light color. (It's been quite a
while since I needed to do this.)
The reason the sort of thing you want to do was eliminated had to do with
what happens to the white space between characters and lines. In short,
things looked awful.
