Setting cartridge levels

Just started using a HP6980....like it very much. The printer uses
cartridges 96 and 97. Bulk ink suppliers tell me that the level indicators
cannot be reset on these cartridges and thus need to top off based on time
as best as possible.

Any new information on level resetting of these carts?

The bulk ink suppliers are correct in this case, there is no way to reset a
used cartridge.

I think you should qualify that statement a bit. Maybe certain models like
the HP6970 cannot be reset, but my Epson RX500 third party cartridges
can easily be reset with a 'chip resetter', readily available.

I think Bob is specifically referring to the HP96 and HP97 cartridges. My
other printer uses HP56 and HP57 whose levels can be reset like many other
printer cartridges out there.

I am hoping someone might have some personal tips as to how they manage
topping off. For now, I will set a monthly reminder or something like that.

That is correct, the 96 and 97 cannot be reset. Unlike the Epson this does
not affect the functionality of the printer, as a cartridge that reads empty
can still print.

OK, now you've got me wondering. My printer uses the HP 56 and 57 carts,
too, but I thought it was the printer that is reset, not the cartridges.
The way it was explained to me, the printer reads the cartridge serial
number, so it knows if it's re-inserted. The printer can retain up to
three cartridge numbers, so if you have four carts and rotate them, the
printer will forget the first one and think it's a new cartridge.

TJ, my understanding on these HP printers under discussion is that you are
absolutely correct as you state above. I think it is a matter of semantics
in that when we say 'resetting the cartridge level indicator,' we really
mean resetting the level monitor function in the printer so that the
refilled cartridge looks like a new and not recently refilled cartridge.

On my HP6980 printer and probably many others with the 96 and 97 cartridges,
HP has deleted the feature of rotating carts to make the newly filled cart
look brand new.

I orginally asked this question with the remote hope that someone found an
'underground' method of making a refilled cartridge look like a new one to
the printer.

This is true for the 56/57 cartridge and those previous. For the 96/97
series cartridges the "used" indicator is in the cartridge, not stored in
the printer as it was in previous generations. Once the cartridge is used
it is used.

Thanks, Bob, therein lies the solution about resetting the level indicator
for the 96/97. Appreciate the informaton.
