Epson Scan Cannot Be Started...

    We have an Epson 5400CX Printer on a 20 inch imac running 10.3.7 with
    three user accounts. All user accounts have full admin privileges.

    When the main user (from which the software was installed) logs on, no
    problem. But when the other two users log on they get a message that
    says "Epson Scan Cannot be Started. Do you want to troubleshoot this?"


    Of course the troubleshooting stuff is useless.

    Anyone know what is causing this and how to fix it?

    If you are receiving the message EPSON SCAN CANNOT BE STARTED....Please
    follow the steps below to attempt to resolve your issue.

    1. Open your HARD DRIVE then LIBRARY then IMAGE CAPTURE and DEVICES.
    2. Look for EPSON SCANNER and drag it onto the desktop.
    3. Open your HARD DRIVE, go to APPLICATIONS, click on UTILITIES and launch
    ACTIVITY MONITOR.
    4. QUIT the IMAGE CAPTURE and EPSON SCANNER processes.
    5. Click on the Epson Scan icon. Should your scanner be scanning fine now,
    please send EPSON SCANNER to the TRASH from your desktop.

    Are you using Fast User Switching? IIRC the _first_ user to log in launches
    the scanner software, and no-one else can launch it until that user logs out.

    Interesting. I've tried to uninstall the Scanner drivers for my
    CX4600 a few times and it would say "uninstall successful but
    files couldn't be removed due to them being in use..." I couldn't
    see any obvious apps running but there may have been something
    deep down...

    Stupid message. How can they say the uninstall was successful
    when it has left dozens of files strewn around.

    Re. ibook's comments, I was talking to Epson Tech support the
    other day and they told me that NONE of the scanners out there
    are intended to be used by multiple people on any machines. I'm
    not sure I completely believe this but judging from the sloppy
    way Epson's installers work, it wouldn't surprise me. If you go
    around and look at some of the files installed, you'll discover
    that they all still are owned my the installer AND the group has
    not been set to Admin. That means none of the other Admins are
    going to have clean access to them for admin purposes (shouldn't
    hurt the run time capabilities though).

    I think that it gives that message because at least one 'keep an eye on the
    scanner' app is running as a startup item, and the installer can't uninstall
    it because it's running, and can't turn it off and then uninstall it because
    Epson's programmers ain't too bright.

    Apparently what they do is park some items in the Trash and/or turn off the
    setting which launches them at startup. The next time you restart, they're
    gone.

    You get the same message when you upgrade certain components of some Epson
    scanning software. Stuff can't be changed but the install is successful.

    I believe it. I think that Epson's software is even worse on Windows machines
    with multiple users than on Macs. It appears that they have a fundamental
    problem.

    Epson is not alone with that kind of thing. Install an HP printer or scanner
    or all-in-one using the standard HP driver files from their site (my favs are
    the 46 MB .dmg which updates most all-in-ones and some inkjets, the 30 MB
    general inkjet .dmg, and the 16 MB 'printer driver only' update for some
    all-in-ones and inkjets) and then run 'repair privileges'. Amazing, isn't it?

    the INSTALLATION WAS SUCCESSFUL screen is an is generated by OSX not epson.
    As you might have realized by now it means "file uncompressed
    successfully" Apple does have a way with their techical terms one more
    example is in 10.2 "Print Centre" and 10.3 "Printer Setup Utility", "Print
    & Faxes" makes us all Macintosh OSX users baffled some times.

    Back to the topic, try this:

    In order to resolve this issue we will need to get a clean reinstall by
    removing all Epson Scan files and reinstalling only the Epson Scan driver
    from the website.

    To completely uninstall the scanner software please follow the steps
    below.

    BASIC UNINSTALL

    1. Restart after last attempt to scan. Disconnect scanner from Mac.
    2. Load Epson Software CD. Open CD. Go into the Mac OS X and then the
    Epson Scan folder.
    3. Click on Epson Scan Installer to launch it. Pause at the "Easy Install"
    stage.
    4. Change "Easy Install" to "Uninstall" and click "Uninstall" to remove
    Epson scan files.
    5. Click Quit and close all windows when uninstall is complete. Restart
    before reinstalling.

    ADVANCED UNINSTALL

    To ensure that all Epson Scan files have been removed from the system you
    would need to check for the following items in the Hard Drive. Please
    note: the files found will vary by OS and driver version. Not all files
    and locations will be present.

    1. In HD, APPLICATIONS - remove EPSON SCAN and EPSON SCANNER MONITOR, if
    present

    NOTE: If you receive an error that EPSON SCANNER MONITOR cannot be deleted
    because it is in use, go into HD, APPLICATIONS, UTILITIES and open
    ACTIVITY MONITOR. Highlight the EPSON SCANNER MONITOR process and click
    STOP or QUIT PROCESS to FORCE QUIT the process. Close ACTIVITY MONITOR.
    You can now delete EPSON SCANNER MONITOR.

    2. In HD, LIBRARY, APPLICATION SUPPORT - remove EPSON folder and EPSON
    SCAN, if present

    NOTE: If you have any other Epson products on the system, open the EPSON
    folder and check the contents before deleting. If files belonging to the
    other product appear, leave the EPSON folder. Remove only files inside it
    that are related to the scanner, for example "Epson USB Scanner" or "Epson
    FW scanner bundle".

    3. In HD, LIBRARY, APPLICATION SUPPORT, TWAIN*, TWAIN DATA SOURCES -
    remove EPSON SCAN, if present, and any files bearing your scanner's name.
    (*No TWAIN folder in OS 10.3)

    4. In HD, LIBRARY, IMAGE CAPTURE, TWAIN DATA SOURCES - remove the ".ds"
    file bearing your scanner's name, ie EPSON STYLUS #### X.ds

    5. In HD, USERS, (YOUR USER NAME), LIBRARY, PREFERENCES - remove EPSON
    STYLUS #### PREFS, if present

    6. In HD, USERS, (YOUR USER NAME), LIBRARY, PREFERENCES, EPSON - remove
    EPSON SCAN and EPSON SCANNERMONITOR PREFS, if present

    REINSTALL

    Once the removal is complete, restart your computer. After the restart,
    follow the steps below to download and install the most current Epson Scan
    driver:

    1. Go to http://support.epson.com
    2. Under Welcome to Epson Support click on ALL-IN-ONES and select FLATBED
    and then your Stylus model name. Under the Drivers & Downloads section
    select Macintosh.
    3. Download the most current version of TWAIN DRIVER AND EPSON SCAN
    UTILITY for OS 10.3.
    4. After download is complete, double click the "Epson#####.sea.hqx" icon
    that appears on your desktop, then click CONTINUE, then CONTINUE again,
    then OK on the INSTALLATION WAS SUCCESSFUL screen.
    5. Open the new folder created by the extraction process. It will appear
    something like "Epson#####".
    6. When you open this folder, you will find a file with a .DMG extension.
    Double-click on it. This will create another icon on the desktop with the
    name of your printer. Double-click to open the DISK IMAGE file.
    NOTE: In most OS 10.3 systems the installer will perform this step
    automatically and you will see an EPSON SCAN INSTALLER.PKG in the
    Epson##### folder.
    7. Double click the EPSON SCAN INSTALLER to start the installation
    process.
    8. The next menu will prompt you to ensure that you have Administrator
    Rights to install the scanner driver. Click on the lock (if necessary)
    and enter your password.
    9. The actual installation process will begin. Follow prompts to do an
    EASY INSTALL. Click QUIT when the installation is complete. Restart the
    computer and reconnect the scanner before testing.

    TEST

    To test the scanner driver please follow the steps below:

    1. Launch Epson Scan by going into your HARD DRIVE, APPLICATIONS, and
    EPSON SCAN.
    2. Select your scanner from the list of models and click OK.
    3. In the FILE SAVE SETTINGS window, click CHOOSE to select the folder you
    would like to save your image file in.
    4. Change the file name prefix and start number if you like.
    5. Select the file type you would like to save it as. (ie. .JPG, .TIFF,
    PDF, or .PICT)
    Note: The file name will be the made by the prefix you specify followed by
    the start number and file type.
    (for example if the prefix = "img", the start number = "1", and the type
    is "JPG", the name of the file will be "IMG001.JPG")
    6. Click OK.
    7. The EPSON SCAN window will open and begin scanning in FULL AUTO MODE.
    In FULL AUTO MODE the software makes all the decisions for you (as to what
    is being scanned, where it is on the flatbed, etc). This is the easiest
    way to scan.
    8. If you want full control over the scanning process click PAUSE and
    change FULL AUTO MODE to HOME MODE or PROFESSIONAL MODE. In the latter two
    modes you can change your scan settings as desired. Click SCAN after you
    have selected your settings. Click CLOSE once the EPSON SCAN is finished
    scanning.
    9. When scanning is complete, your images will be saved in the location
    specified on FILE SAVE SETTINGS, with the prefix and in the format you
    set.

    Godd info to know. However, it was the "uninstall successful"
    message. I guess it means that the code just ran to completion or
    something like that.

    Thanks for the detailed description. I did most but not the final
    cleanups. I'll have to try it the next time around. However, it
    is still amazing that I get a "uninstall successful" when all of
    those files are STILL sitting on my HD. They were NOT uninstalled!

    The test described was always achieved. However, here are two
    questions I've not been able to figure out or get an answer from
    Epson on:


    1) After installing EpsonScan I bring up the ColorSync Utility
    and look at the Colorsync Registered Devices. My EPSON Stylus
    CX4600 is listed with its default profile as "Scanner RGB
    (transmissive)" located at
    /System/Library/ColorSync/Profiles/Generic RGB Profile.icc.

    --> Is this supposed to be right? The installer loads 10 profiles
    but then the scanner registers with a system generic? And a
    TRANSMISSIVE one to boot? (the CX4600 does do film/slides) Both
    the transmissive and reflective generics are the same profile but
    STILL, this is really screwy.


    2) The only input type profile provided during the install is one
    called "EPSON Stylus CX4600" located at
    /Library/ColorSync/Profiles/EPSON Stylus CX4600. I would presume
    that this is supposed to be the scanner's profile. It has a
    bizzare and large lobe in the blue magenta region.

    --> Is this the scanner profile that we are supposed to use? If
    so, why is *IT* not the one registered as the factory default in
    Colorsync (i.e., the ColorSync utility's Devices area)?


    3) I do not understand how to change the "Default scanner" device
    in the ColorSync Utility to something different (say, "Scanner
    RGB (reflective)"). If I knew that the profile mentioned above
    was the scanner's true profile, I could configure it in to
    replace the "factory" profile kloodge in the ColorSync Utility's
    Devices area.

    --> How do you change the Default selected in the devices area of
    the Utility? The "Make Default Scanner" button stayes greyed-out
    regardles of which of the EPSON Stylus CX4600 "scanners" I select.


    Does anyone have a handle on any of these issues?

    I fixed this by finding all epson files related to my scanner (320
    perfection) using spotlight. I put them in the trash and emptied it
    Some processes were running so would not be permanently deleted. Yo
    can quit these processes by using the Activity Monitor in utilites. Th
    ones I quit had Twain and Image capture in their titles.

    After all this, I installed the latest drivers and miraculously I a
    scanning right now.

    I am using 10.4 by the way
