Experiences with the Samsung SCX-4200 and Mac OS X Tiger, anyone?
They claim it was compliant, but you never know.

    Hi Andre,

I don't have experience with the Samsung printers but I generally
recommend Postscript-compatible printers (especially for Macs). The
Samsung SCX-4200 uses something called SPL (SPL2). However, the PPD
files for the SCX-4200 suggest that it understands PostScript or
something PostScript-like. Besides the PPD file, the only other file
included in the Samsung driver is some backend rastertoqpdl converter.

The one thing I liked about Samsung drivers is that they don't blast
your computer with a bunch of files. The scanner driver is just a
directory of files as required for TWAIN on mac. The printer driver is
just a few PPD files and the backend. Even better, the uninstaller
(included in the installer) uninstalled every file it installed. Other
manufacturers seem to think that bigger drivers are better drivers and
the OS is something to be bypassed. And get over any expectations that
the uninstaller will cleanup all the dropping scattered all over your
    system.

I would look into the SPL2 thing and try to gauge how much support
there will be for the printer in future versions of MacOS. If that
seems okay, see how things work when the rubber hits the road so to
    speak.

    Sounds good!

Thanks Ben, that's very helpful! My Mom won't need a printer before
October, which will probably be an SCX-4200. I'll keep you posted!

hi, i got the printer, and it works great, is fast, but i am not able
to use the duplex printing function yet. i'm looking for a work
around. tech support said it had something to do with non postscript
and it being a gdi printer. so, to get a copier, printer/ scanner for
100 bucks, i'll settle w/ no duplex, but i'll work to find a work
    around.. - andy

I bought a Samsung SCX-4200 with my new iMac running Tiger. I
installed the drivers from Samsung and was able to print to this device
without any problems. I am however having trouble scanning. The Apple
ImageCapture application sees the scanner and even gets displays a
"preview" of the item to be scanned. The "scan" button of Image
Capture however does not get activated and so I cannot actually do a
scan. Any suggestions on what to try next would be greatly
    appreciated.

    Thanks!

Vic, have you tried scanning from a different TWAIN-aware
    application?

I've ordered the printer for my Mom and the use with Tiger/PPC
yesterday, it should arrive next week. I'll either make it work or
    get a Brother DCP-7010 for her (ugh-ly!).

    No, I haven't tired a different TWAIN-aware application. I don't think
I have anything other than Image Capture on my iMac. Any suggestions
on software I can try (preferably software that is free or
    inexpensive).

    Thanks v. much!

I had exactly the same problem until I found out that the Samsung
ScanThru Software is in fact an MS Word Plugin!

In MS Word (provided you have it) select Insert --> Picture -->
From Scanner or Camera. Everything works fine, if a bit unstable.

    Re: Re:Samsung SCX-4200

    Hello

i also got the Samsung SCX-4200 and it is working well with the MacOSX.
i am a type designer and it is realy important to get sharp high
    quality type new i print.

the problem is that when i am printing form Adobe softewares like
AbodeIndesign SC or so, the resolution of the text is so bad. but when
i print the same type document from MS Word or from the web, the type
    resolution is great.

so it seams that the printer is not working properly with Adobe
    softwares.

    any help or suggestions?

    cheers

    [no top-posting please]

Image Capture is able to do the job. To scan scan to a file, you've
got to select the part of the picture you want to scan with the
    mouse.

No, it's a 'real' a Twain source. I'm able to scan from both Image
Capture and Portable Gimp (from macupdate.com).

Also from Text Edit (via the Services menu) and Preview (File >
    Import Image).
