Hi,
~
it is the second time my Brother HL-2140 printer gives me sh!t
telling me to get a new toner ...
~
Thing is that I see the printed pages perfectly fine, but after
trying the trick of taking the cartridge out and placing it back in,
it printed a few more pages fine and then went on strike again
~
I have generally read about companies selling printers making actual
money from toner sells, etc and built-in sensors and counters as well
as ways to reset them, but I have also read about them being specific
for brands + models
~
Any tips you would share with me to keep this printer doing its job?
I have no problem getting into its electronics if needed, but if
possible I would prefer step by step guides with clear pictures
~
Thanks

Brother printer reports "New Toner Needed" early because this is
better than reporting late. Shaking the drum unit to redistribute
the remaining powder is all any user can do. Best policy is to
buy a new cartridge when NTN is first reported but to instal it
only when toner is actually exhausted.

Look up "flag gears" you'll need to get to reset the printer
cartridge. It'll use lower voltages, normal with a new cartridge,
which is going to be "out of spec" for the existing, old cartridge.
If output (diminished darkness) is acceptable or adjustable, multiple
refills may defer drum replacement costs awhile longer. I'm on my
third refill for the starter that came with a Samsung. I see OEM
refill drums also include flag gears for your printer. Something
specific I'd consider getting a grasp of, what they're doing, if you
plan on keeping your HP and doing your own refills.

Well, the actual problem is that thing stops printing even if pages
come out just fine

The gears that came up were only $3.50 when I typed your model# and
something like "page-count reset" into Google. One of the bigger OEM
printer supply marketing web houses. So was mine, Samsung_ML2510 --
cheap, right at $40US shipped off a Newegg sale (plenty and often a
sale for the ML2510, too). I wouldn't think less of yours, though.
Mine is a similar distraction, only with a simpler fuse that blows
itself when Samsung wants $100 for a drum assembly shell-out. An
idiot lite comes on, is all (doesn't stop printing), and since all I
installed is the basic drivers (sans their software), I ignore its red
flashing light. I did, however, read up on the ML2510, thoroughly
discouraged coming in here, looking for a inkjet after my old Okidata
laser died. Things had changed, though, and these new self-contained
budget lasers looked interesting. Up to my third "starter cartridge"
refill, as I mentioned. Buying the unit, from what I could pick up on
how others were using it, as well with an order for refill bottles of
toner from Ebay, at the same time. (Didn't bother with included
replacement fuses, and didn't need to use a soldering iron to melt a
hole for accessing the toner casing). And, I'd have done the same with
yours -- if and had I figured out first how those "flag gears" work
for, gotten some, while picking up toner beforehand for doing my own
refills. The site said yours will run up to 8 or 9 refills with a
starter cartridge, same as mine, although 3 or 4 is the norm. For
printing books and not caring about minor print inconsistencies,
reading's fine and I'm tickled pink -- well on its way to paying for
itself.

Have fun.

Actually, it was simpler than I expected on the back of the Brother
HL-2140 there is a pin you should press for about 10 seconds to reset
the internal counter
