Brother MFC-J5625DW - problems using photo paper

Can anyone advise me how to get photo paper to feed from the Manual Feed or MP Trays.
I have put the photo paper in both of the back feed slots but the machine still takes plain paper from Tray 1. This is even though I have specified MP Tray as the paper source.
If I remove the plain paper from Tray 1 it keeps asking me to replace it.
