Dell 926 won't print color

i have a dell computer & printer. it just ran out of color ink, and, now won't print with black. the block for (print in black & white only) is grayed out, and won't let me check it. i installed a new color cartridge, and i still have the same problem. computer & printer is 3 years old. have windows vista op. sys. never had this problem, before. any suggestions?
