Epson Aculaser CX28 Scanner problem - Help!

I'm on a Mac OS High Sierra. When I go into system preferences, select the printer and the scanner option I get a box showing all the options, colour, resolution etc, etc. However, when I click scan, I get a message to say that the scanner has an error and the scan failed but no further information. This is driving me mad as the software seems to work up until it's required to do the actual scan. Can anyone help me please?
