guidelines for one who rarely prints

I just bought a Canon inkjet printer. I pirnt at the most once a month and only use black. I don't want the ink to dry out and when I mentioned to my friend that I should do a test print she responded that it was a waste of money-the test print uses heavy ink-the opposite of if you use draft mode. She suggested that if the ink is dry to use a wet cotton swab.

I would appreciate any advice on how often I need to do something.

Thanks,

Take the cartridges and wrap it tight in tissue paper. Give the cartridge a few flicks, this will push the ink in the cartridge towards the printer head (dont do this in your living room - it may be messy!). Then blot the cartridge on a damp paper towel until you see the ink.
