iX4000 printhead replacement?

I have a Canon PIXMA iX4000 printer that has served me well for many years but is now claiming its printhead needs replacing (about £50) meaning it's technically beyond economic repair - but I hate skipping stuff like this, and I wonder if it can be fixed more cheaply by someone who knows about this stuff?
