Lexmark S300-400 and Windows 8.1

My Lexmark S405 printer was working fine this morning. Then I installed Windows 8.1 on my Toshiba. After that my printer and laptop couldn't communicate. I have updated all drivers--on the Toshiba and the Lexmark. I downloaded a universal driver update or something like that from Lexmark that said it covered Windows 8.1. When I try to print it tells me the can't communicate message. When I ask for details I am told to go to printer properties and say "enable bidirectional communication." I can't figure out how to do that. What am I doing wrong?
