Lexmark X544dn three flashes otherwise dead

Some time ago, I bought a working Lexmark X544 laser all-in-one and a non-working X544dn, which is the same same but with a duplexer and wifi networking modules. My thought was to mix and match parts to end up with a working, duplex-capable, wifi-connected printer. Alas, I got hold of a service manual and it says you can't mix and match modules because they personalise to the printer on first switch-on. My circumstances have changed since then and it would now be useful to repair the non-working X544dn. The faulty printer just flashes the power light three times on power up and does nothing else. The service manual says five flashes means replace the controller board, but is silent about what three flashes means.

Anybody out there have any suggestions as to what my next move should be?
