Poor PDF printing to new Epson_but not old HP

Printed from several PDF files, from various sources to a new Epson inkjet. On draft mode, the quality is terrible.
Used Foxit, Sumatra, Evince - all w/ same results.

Printing the same PDFs to an older HP inkjet - also on lowest quality draft - look pretty acceptable, as always.

But, printing other non PDF format files, from several apps to the Epson - in DRAFT - look fine. So it's only PDFs that are a problem for the Epson in draft mode. All other files types printed in Draft on the Epson are OK.

Printing PDFs on the Epson in Standard mode look fine. As said, all other formats printed on the Epson in Draft look OK. That rules out the possibility that HP's Draft mode is just better.

I've heard of people having general PDF print problems, but not for one printer only while another prints fine. Is it realistic that Epson drivers could have problems w/ PDFs AND Draft, but not w/ other files & draft?

Any suggestions?

I don't know why this Epson WF 3540 needs extra help w/ PDFs in Draft mode, but someone suggested using a reader that has a "print as an image" option, somewhere in the print menu of the reader. Foxit didn't (maybe they have another way - or not. Haven't heard back from support). SumatraPDF (open source) did, under the Print > Advanced tab. Using that probably improved PDFs Draft print quality by 100% or more. Not quite as good as printing non PDFs in Draft from different apps - but still much better.

Didn't see such an option in Evince. Someone said Adobe reader may. Another PDF reader or more research may improve PDF draft quality to same as any other file.
