Toshiba eStudio 6516 External LCF says empty when it's not

Toshiba e-Studio 6516a, just got it, not yet familiar with all its functions and idiosyncrasies... external Large Capacity Feeder (exLCF) says it's empty. But it is not empty. It did work for a bit when printer was first here, then I had to remove the exLCF to check on something else and put it back, now it only says empty. Any one have a clue on this? I've been over the connections, the paper drawer open/closed sensor, everything *seems* to be in order.

The tray does *not* raise up after being closed, which is why I checked the paper open/closed sensor, but that makes no difference.
