Lexmark 901 - can't print black when all 3 color tanks are empty; is chip resetter useful?

Hello --

If I refill the three color tanks is a chip resetter needed to make the cartridges recognizable?

Will resetting the chip damage a Lexmark Pinnacle Pro 901?
