I guess I should have known that, having worked at Canon Solutions America for 13 years. As much as I hate purchasing extended warranties, I now buy them (for printers anyway). I bought an Epson ET-8550 that I'm pretty happy with. I wasn't going to reward Canon by buying another Canon printer that they were so insistent on not helping me with.
