Epson scan not sensing individual photos

I am using my Epson WF-7820 to scan photos. I have placed six photos on the scanner glass about one inch apart. When I scan with either SmartScan or EpsonScan 2, it create one scan with all the photos together. It is not recognizing the white space between the individual photos and treating them as six single photos.
