Epson stylus 1400 paper feed problem

Hello I hope someone here can help. the paper goes straight through the priner without printing. gives a paper red light flashing saying its out ofpaper. what would cause this issue? it seems like there is a sensor of some kind not seeing the edgeof paper and not "cueing" up the paper to print

I believe the 1400 uses the PW (paper width) sensor to detect the leading edge of the page as it loads. This is a little optical sensor on the bottom of the carriage. A common (ish) problem is for it to collect ink during head cleanings and/or borderless prints. It may need cleaning. If I'm remembering that model right, the sensor is located on the bottom of the carriage, front right side (if the printer is facing you).
