How to enable 'older generation' HP cartridges?

I have an HP 4632 multi-function printer (fax, scan & print) that uses HP-61 ink cartridges. The color one was empty, so I replaced it with a new O.E.M (original equipment manufacturer) cartridge of the same number (HP-61 XL),

Now I get the message: “older generation ink cartridge,“ and everything stops.

Is there any way to work around this issue?

All ideas & help appreciated

Thanks

Sounds like you purchased an "old" new cartridge. If the date printed on it is 4-4-14 or earlier you will have to replace it. No work around it. If it is a more recent cartridge it is probably electrically bad.

HP ink cartridges have a BBF date so make you use them so they dont go out of date usually its about 12-18 months. If you've also done an update it may be an old chip. So just get a new cartridge and you should be fine.
