Multi-Function Printer with Best Scanning Capabilities?

I would really appreciate some help as I am overwhelmed after visiting dozens of websites & reading hundreds of reviews on Amazon over the past few weeks. I need to purchase a multi-function inkjet printer to replace my HP PhotoSmart, because I need to fax occasionally. My most important concern is to have good, high-resolution scanning so that I can scan old photos that are deteriorating & save them to disk. I am not too concerned with printing out good quality photos -- very rarely do that. Also, I am not concerned with speed. I am able to afford from $150 to $250 if necessary. Also I have room for only 17" wide, which eliminates the HP Officejet Pro 8600. Thanks so much for any help anyone out there can give me!
