Ricoh SP C250SF: paper tray malfunction?

The black triangular plastic feeler on top of the paper tray gets dislocated when the tray is inserted. I cannot see how this is supposed to work, as the feeler has nowhere to go, and I cannot find anything broken. Could someone please explain how this is supposed to work? The service manual is not really helpful here.

The description and picture in section 2.2.3 PAPER END DETECTION of the service manual do not match the printer. Is there someone out there who knows how this is supposed to work?
