Brother MFC-J497DW Won't Scan

I just replaced an older Brother all-in-one with an MFC-J497DW. I managed to set up the printer function but the scan function won't work unless I go through the computer systems folder (Mac) and then it only prints a small portion of the page. This was exactly the same problem I was having with the older Brother, but I was lead to believe it was because that printer couldn't upgrade to the newest OS, BigSur. 11.2.1. Now I am not so sure what the problem is.
