Canon ip4600 Cartridge light problems

Hi guys,

Im having some problems with an ip4600 printer, 4 out of the 5 cartridges all except black are from a company non canon and have worked ok for a while but no light comes on when they are inserted into the printer is this normal for non standard carts? Now I am getting an error saying the black cartridge is empty when its actually full.
