Epson S22 and compatibles

My friend cannot get his Epson S22 to work. The orange light is on. Is it possible that it is something to do with the fact that he has just installed compatible ink cartrides, rather than Epson brand?

If there is likely to be a compatibles problem? Is there a work-around? Thanks.

Maybe in the long-term my friend should go CISS? But, it must not lead to more problems? Any recommendation re CISS for Epson S22? I'm in UK. Thanks.
