Lexmark X543dn does not scan

I have just bought and installed the printer. Printer and copier work.
But I can not scan!
The manual speaks only about a network connection, but this is a home situation: printer connected to laptop (windows7) with usb.
If I open the Scan Center I get the message: please ensure the scanner is on and is connected to the computer.
But ofcourse it is!

Can anyone help please??
