Working on a customer's Canon MF455DW printer I discovered today that it will work with a non-oem 057 toner.
Under "display settings" in the system user interface, find "action when cartridge levels are low" and make sure it's set to "continue printing". That fixes the problem because the printer can't see the toner level and assumes it's low. You should also check in "device management" for "Genuine" mode and make sure it is off.
After these settings are in you'll be able to do a firmware update.
On each power up you'll get a message that says "counterfiet cartridge". and you'll have to click OK. If anyone finds a way to fix that I hope you'll post it.
