MX420 ink absorbers

Good evening. I have a Canon MX420 printer and the ink absorbers are full. They say you have to send the printer in to have these replaced but I can see them from an angle underneath the right side plastic cover. Has anyone successfully reached in there and replaced or cleaned the original ones? I can see it a major ordeal sending this thing out for service.
