What new hp printers can take generic cartridges

Just don't. You're better off with an Epson or Canon. HP keeps making cheaper and cheaper products/printers while locking the customer into essentially pay per print.

I've heard that about hp. Have always had hp. Which one would be a good all in one printer?

If you're looking for an all in one solution, I would probably go with a Brother laser. For printing photographs I would go with Canon or Epson.
