Problem printing on coloured paper and cloth

Hi,
I desperately need some advice about my MFC-J6955J A3 inkjet printer. I am having a problem with it that I haven't been able to resolve.

I do bookbinding as a hobby and am currently binding an a4 size hard back book which is intended to have a cloth cover with title and cover design printed on it. I have checked to make sure the bookcloth is accepted by the printer and it does go through easily with no jamming and no complaints from the printer. My problem is that the printer will only print in black! The cloth is dark green in colour and the title and design should be printed in white, but it only comes out with black print. I noticed this same problem when printing on coloured paper. It seems that my Brother printer will only use colours on white plain copy paper and refuses to use colour printing on anything else. It is a reasonably new printer and the colour ink cartridge heads are clean.

Is this normal for a Brother printer, or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks.

Hey JCB, yeah unfortunately most inkjets (including Brother) don’t print white since they rely on the paper color for “white” areas. They also sometimes default to grayscale or black-only on non-standard media. You’d probably need specialty white ink or maybe try using a white toner printer or foil stamping for that kind of project.
