Receive fax issue

I have Comcast triple play. I think I finally got to print received faxes by rebooting the gateway/modem.
The engineer at Comcast said he saw where call forwarded was enabled so disabled it.This is after I rebooted and got it to work.
I do have an answering machine, a gateway and the all in one which is OK as I tested it with one ring and it worked.
Which change do you think allowed the machine to print faxes?
