Smudge/streaks on 4 yr old HL-L2380DW printings

I have a 4+ yr old Brother HL-L2380DW printer that has always worked fine until recently. Can someone tell me what is causing these smudge streaks on two areas of the printed page? The streak/smudge on the left side started first then the more obvious one followed. Is it something to do with the toner cartridge or is it a repair issue and the cost not worth it if needed?
