Trouble resetting HL-1210W

I bought this printer so I can refill.

Instructions everywhere say I simply press the power button seven times and it should reset the ink counter (or something like that).
I've done this a million times. Nothing works.

I spent 45 minutes chatting to Brother tech support.
No joy.

What am I missing?
