What’s the Best Printer Setup for Custom Packaging (Boxes, Wrapping Papers, Labels)?

Hey everyone!
I’m exploring printers for custom packaging needs — mainly for printing on wrapping papers, custom boxes, kraft paper, Mylar bags, and even labels or sticker rolls. There are so many options (laser vs inkjet, UV printing, flexographic, thermal, etc.) and I’m not sure which one suits best for small business packaging work.

Can anyone here share what type of printer/media works well for:
  1. Custom box printing (especially cardboard or corrugated material)
  2. Tissue or wax wrapping paper
  3. Waterproof labels or sticker sheets
  4. Mylar or plastic-based materials

Also, is it worth investing in an in-house setup or should I go for third-party print services for small-batch orders? Any guidance or experience would be super helpful.

For custom boxes or corrugated, digital inkjet or flexographic printing works well depending on volume. For wrapping paper, such as tissue or wax types, inkjet or UV-curable systems are good if the media supports it. For waterproof labels or stickers, thermal labels paper or solvent and eco-solvent inks on synthetic label stocks are reliable. For Mylar or plastic materials, UV, solvent, or eco-solvent inks tend to perform best. Whether to do it in-house or outsource depends on your volume, cost, and flexibility. If you produce often and want control, in-house makes sense. For sporadic or specialized jobs, using third-party print services is often more practical.

As a researcher and journalist, I recently covered a study on packaging materials, including wax wrapping paper and label technologies. For small business packaging, the right printer really depends on the material you’re working with.

For labels especially custom kiss cut stickers, custom clear cut stickers, and sticker rolls thermal and inkjet setups usually perform well, depending on whether you need waterproof output.
For custom printed boxes, many brands rely on either UV printing or outsourcing to third-party services because cardboard and corrugated stock need stronger machines.

If you’re working with different surfaces like tissue, Mylar, or kraft paper, an in-house setup can get expensive quickly, so small-batch businesses often find third-party printing more practical.
