6180 crum error - worth the new ink?

We have a phaser 6180 in our office. We replaced Cyan and Black with generic cartridges. Now our printer throws CRUM errors daily for the 2 colors we replaced. New Xerox cartridges will cost almost as much as the printer did. Is this printer known to be good? If it has a bad rep, we think maybe it would make more sense just to spend the $$ on a new printer. Any input would be appreciated.
