Black background

When I copy or scan a document or photograph the output comes out with a black background. In fact, I tried copying and scanning a single white page and the output comes out entirely black (what a big wate of ink as well!).

I have an HP J6480 All in One. The printer is about 2 years old. The printer does print normally so I know it has something to do with the copying and scanning only.

Any suggestions?
