Canon PIXMA TS8220 printer ink issue

My Canon printer depletes the color cartridges when the settings are for black and white only. Even when there is enough black inks to print it will not allow printing since the magenta and cyan cartridges are depleted. Is there any way to stop it from using anything other than the black ink for black and white printing?
