drab pictures

I have a canon pixma Ip500 printer and I can not get my pictures to come out bright and colourful like the screen shots and like Morrisons used to do. Any advice would be welcome.

What kind of paper are u trying to use?
What application do you use to print photos?
What kind of ink is installed in printer?

I have been using Glossy premium quality inkjet photo paper. I have been using PhotoScape to print my photos. Sorry I don't know what kind of ink, it was ordered some time ago and just has no name on the replacement colours.

Printer looks to be 10 or 12 years old
Paper is excellent choice!
Recommend you use Canon ink only. Ink designed for your printer.
PhotoScape looks to be very nice app.
Dont try to print large photo if your camera is rated 1MP (megapixel) or less
Compare 3X5 against 5X7 photo. If little difference then camera not the problem.
Try printing same photo on friends printer or have Walmart print one for you. Transport photo on thumb drive.
First suspicion is your ink quality. However could not locate source for Canon ink this model printer.
