Sorry for replying to my own query, but this may be of help to someone. I contacted Epson customer support, and they sent me nine pages of instructions to deal with this. two hours later having done everything as instructed, the problem was still there. they suggested someone might help by 'phone, but I decided to have one more try of my own. I use a 3rd party uninstal programme called Riva uninstal, I used this to un ann re- instal the printer, all was then ok. This took 10 minutes.
