How to connect Brother Printer to Vista 64

I have a Brother DCP 1000 and am running Vista 64. When I connect printer to computer, the printer comes on, but will not print. I have used the print drivers on Brother's site, but they do not seem to work. Has anyone experienced the same problem and solved it. Please advise.
