HP C5550 carriage issue

The carriage is stuck in and will not budge. How can I fix this?

take a pair of pliers and try to grab it and pull it out. it may damage the cartridge but if thats all you can do to get it out then thats all you can do.

Okay but what caused it to jam up in the first place??
