New printer won't print PDF

Hi can anyone help me please? I just bought a new printer Canon Pixma MG5350. I seem to be able to print photos or word docs ok, but when I try to print a PDF the options are only my old printer (HP) or XPS Document Writer or fax. I have uninstalled my old printer. When I go to Devices and Printers and try to make sure the Canon is recognised as the default printer I can't do it and I get an error message - error ox000000709 double check printer name and make sure that printer is connected to the network. My computer is not networked and is stand alone. Ideas anyone?
