Printer Reset Chip Question

So I bought refill toner and a reset chip for my Samsung HL-2851ND printer. My toner is practically out but I think I can still print up to a 100 or so more pages with the current chip. I was wonder if I could refill the toner first and keep my previous chip inside until it locks? Can I install the new chip after my printer locks saying that it's out of toner? Or is it that once my printer locks, installing a new chip is rendered useless?
