Questions about ink for ET-8550

I have an ET-8550 that is now roughly two years old. It gets used off and on, not heavily. While to was bought to be able to print photos and artwork, it is rarely used that way. Printing is mostly black and white documents with occasional color. Recently the quality got really bad. We had to go through many cleaning cycles over two days to get it back to printing properly, but in the end it was successful. That took a lot of ink. But still, the ink tanks are pretty close to half full.

The owners manual says it is best to refill the tanks at least once a year. It also says that when filling a tank it should be topped off, so the low ink warnings will work properly.

With the usage pattern I have, I wonder what strategy and plan should I have for refilling ink? I have the the ink bottles used to initially fill the printer, with the excess they had. But that won't be enough to top off the tanks. And of course it is now old ink. Should I just dump the remaining old ink in now? Or wait another couple of years till a refill is needed, and then use both the old ink and enough new ink to fill the tanks?
