The scanner is in use or unavailable ET 3600

I only use this printer every two weeks but every time I do I have to reinstall the software. This morning I wanted to do a scan but it tells me 'The scanner is in use or unavailable', I have deleted the printer and re-installed the software but it stll won't scan, what am I doing wrong?
