Cancelling instant ink

My HP printer will not work properly after I cancelled instant ink, even though I followed instructions to dump existing ink and bought new HP ink… I have a feeling the software that stops the printer working on non HP instant ink is still operating because the ink is no longer activated by the software… any thoughts???
