Cartridge fail message w/ HP deskjet 2050

Hey guys,

For two days now the colour "cartridge fail/empty" light has been constantly flashing on my 2 month old printer and It will not accept either the old or a new colour cartridge. An "ink cartridge failure" message comes up on my PC, asking that I remove the old cartridges and replace with new ( I have done this). What else can I do apart from; the usual disconnect and wait several minutes, clean the connections with alcohol and a cotton bud, shake the cartridge, or repeatedly take out and replace the cartridges?

ps If it's of any importance, for a short time I have been refilling my old cartridges due to environmental concerns.
